Brian stated that each of us who lives in a home needs to know where the main water shutoff valve is located.  Unplugging appliances or a well pump can reduce, but not eliminate, the potential for water damage in a home during the occupants’ absence.  The hoses on a washer, pipes under a sink/tub, or a deteriorating water heater are examples of sources of water than can cause continuing damage if water is available to flow to them after they leak or rupture.  Therefore, before you leave for an extended period, shutoff the main water valve to minimize damage if a break occurs.  Brian himself turns off the valve when gone overnight or longer.
